The Evangelische Hochschule Darmstadt is an officially recognised and Church-sponsored University. The sponsors are the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau, the Protestant Church of Kurhesse-Waldeck and the social welfare organisation of both Hessian Protestant Churches, the Diakonie Hesse.

The EHD has approximately 1,700 registered students, 40 professors and 10 scientific employees who lecture and do research, 30 employees who provide administrative support and about 100 visiting lecturers every semester. The Hephata Diakonie in Schwalmstadt (North Hesse) is the second campus.
